Cake Smash Photo Session FAQ’s
What is a Cake Smash?
After first originating in America, cake smash parties have been taking the UK by storm in the last few years as parents look for a fun and memorable way to mark their child's first birthday. The trend involves letting your one-year-old loose with a giant cake while being pictured by a professional photographer, creating some cheeky and adorable shots and normally includes your little one having a bath after they have smashed a cake. The session is a fun sensory experience for the baby who is exploring the different textures, smells and taste of the cake and experimenting with what they can do with it!
What ages can Cake Smash Sessions be booked for?
They are best done either a month or so before their birthday, typically at about 11months. This age is great for cake smash shoots as children are still in the exploration stage of their development and most love to get messy. This also means you can use the photographs for birthday party invites or as thank you cards after their birthday celebrations.
When should I book my child’s Cake Smash photo session?
As with any session, I would recommend that you book in advance as my diary fills up months in advance and you wouldn’t want to miss out by not being able to book a date that suits you!
Do I need to organise anything in advance?
You don’t need to worry about organising anything with the exception of booking the date you would like and paying a £20 deposit for the photo shoot, the remaining balance is paid on the day. I have lots of different options and themes available for your cake smash including a choice of backgrounds and a wide range of outfits from coloured tutus, rompers, crowns, pants sets and cute ties. If you have a particular idea of a colour scheme or theme you would like please let me know in advance and I can try and make it happen.
How long does a Cake Smash Session usually take?
Smash and Splash photo shoots are always led by the baby but typically will last around an hour or longer if your baby remains happy to play and is enjoying the session. I only book one session a day so if we need to take a break, let the little one relax and play for a while or have a cuddle with mummy & daddy then thats not a problem.
What happens on the day?
When you arrive we will take some time just to get everyone settled and have a chat about different options available for the shoot. I like to start with some clean images on your choice of backdrops, and then we bring out the cake and get messy! Sometimes these little ones are reluctant at first and so the session can require the parent's getting involved too, so make sure you wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. The final part of the session is so much fun when we bring out a little tub and give the baby some play time in the bubbles and capture some gorgeous bath time shots!
What do I need to bring with me on the day?
I ask that parents provide their own cake so we don't need to worry about any allergies and this also means you get the cake of your choice. We can discuss cake details, outfits and backdrops during our pre-session consultation. I have a selection of outfits for use in the cake smash photos but if there is a particular outfit you would like to use then feel free to bring it along.
How do I book?
All I need to know at the time of booking is your child’s name, date of birth and details of any allergies. It is helpful if you can take a look through my gallery and let me know if there are particular backgrounds or outfits you like.
I will also take a contact number for you and give you a call a week or two before your session so we can chat through the final details and any questions you may have.
You can book your Cake Smash photo shoot through the contact me section of my website.
