Newborn Photo Session FAQ’s

When Should I Book my Session?

Babies are usually photographed anywhere from 7-14 days. If you are interested in all of the cute wrapped, squishy baby poses then you should want to come around 5-12 days. With that being said, it is best to book either during your pregnancy session or as soon as the baby is born. We will set a date from your due date or scheduled c-section, with the understanding that we can easily move the date or time, if baby comes early or late. We ask clients to call us when the baby is born with the arrival date and weight – this way we can plan the best schedule. Babies are best photographed around 10 days, but this is dependent upon the weight. Smaller babies (5/6 pounds) may be photographed around 12-14 days, while as bigger babies should be photographed around 5-12 days.

I am sensitive to the fact that new mums need to recover and we will together to schedule the best time for you and your baby. Please call either prior to the delivery or once the baby has arrived and we will go over the best time to schedule your newborn session. Regardless of my schedule, I always leave time for newborns!

How Long are the Sessions

Newborn sessions generally take about 2-3 hours but no two babies are alike. I always have some snacks, drinks, a changing area and a little play area for the toddlers. I welcome siblings and parents to a newborn  session for no additional charge.

The session can go over or under these times, but you will not be rushed and we will have plenty of time to make sure we capture the images you will treasure for a lifetime.

Feeding your Baby

I generally advise mums to do most of the feeding once they arrive at my studio so that baby is nice, relaxed and has a full tummy!  I also use heaters to ensure the babies and lovely and toasty which hopefully also means they are snoozy! I have some white noise to help soothe babies and sometimes a dummy or a suck on a parents figures will send them off to the land of nod!

This way we can start with an outfit or wrap while they digest and then continue on as they are nice and  comfortable. With that being said, if you want baby naked, then at some point they may poo or wee! And thats ok!! I am pretty used to it now and it truly doesn’t bother me – we just grab another blanket!

What Props can we use?

I have a wide range of different props that we can use for your shoot.  I have a bed, drawer, baskets, bowls and blankets, wraps, knits and headbands in every colour! I have all of the popular colours and styles for boys and girls.

All materials, wraps, blankets and clothing are washed in dye free detergents and are always kept clean. There is a changing facility in the studio which I keep stocked with baby wipes and diapers.

You are also welcome to bring anything from your home which you would like to include. If this is the case, drop me a line or give me a call and we can chat through how we can incorporate it in to the session as long as it is safe for the baby.

What should we Wear?

I always think that clothing for parents and siblings is best when it is kept classic and simple, and free of patterns or stripes. It is best to wear colours that will look great when the artwork is displayed in your home and avoid anything that will date over the years. Light or dark colours, work equally well. For siblings, I prefer that they have bare feet and for the little girls a simple dress or tutu is great. For boys, simple jeans and plain coloured tops are recommended.

Baby Posing

You would be aware that with many of the cute baby poses you see,  retouching will involved and babies are never put in harmful positions. If you have certain poses in mind, it is always good for us to discuss this in advance of your session so that we can ensure we have the right props and accessories ready for you.
